Members of the Senate leadership, led by the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, visited the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock on Tuesday night, December 16. The Senate leadership was in the villa to brief President Muhammadu Buhari on the Senate resolutions and recommendations on the recent killings in Benue state. Earlier in the day, the Senate had earlier condemned the killings and resolved to:

  1. Give the Inspector General of Police 14 days to arrest and investigate the perpetrators of the act.
  2. Direct the federal ministry of agriculture to urgently provide facilities and empower its officers to enforce documentation protocols, quarantine animals and livestock movement at the borders. President Buhari was briefed by the Senate leadership on its resolutions and recommendations regarding the Benue killings.

  1. Urgent reconsideration of creation of state police and community police should be carried out by the Ad-hoc committee and report back to the Senate.
  2. The federal government should review and revamp the security infrastructure of the nation.
  3. The Senate should convey as a matter of national urgency a national security summit.
  4. The federal government should ensure that those living in Internally Displaced Persons camps are properly taken care of. The Senate also recommended that the Senate president convey its resolutions back to the executive arm of government. President Buhari had on Sunday, January 14, met with the leadership of Nigeria’s federal legislature over the security situation in Benue state and other parts of the country.
