The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA, has commended the enduring legacies and the remarkable contributions of Prince (Hon.) Dr Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, MON, OON, to party politics, public service and governance and religious harmony in Lagos State, describing him as a distinguished statesman whose contributions deserve recognition.

Abiru spoke on Monday as Chairman and Chief Launcher at the public presentation of Islam in the Kingdom of Lagos, published in Olusi’s honour at Eko Club, Surulere, Lagos, alongside another commemorative publication, titled. Pearl of the Monarchy.

The senator described the books as valuable contributions to preserving the religious, cultural, educational and intellectual heritage of Lagos, noting that Islam had played a significant role in the history and development of the Lagos Kingdom.

He said the history of Islam in Lagos extended beyond worship to encompass scholarship, leadership, commerce, philanthropy, community development and social integration.

Abiru emphasised the importance of documenting these contributions for future generations, expressing concern that the gradual erosion of historical consciousness had left many young Nigerians unfamiliar with the sacrifices and achievements of legends like Prince Olusi, who are shaping society.

He commended the editor of Islam in the Kingdom of Lagos, Professor T.G.O. Gbadamosi, the reviewer, Professor Amidu Sanni, and other contributors for their scholarly efforts in preserving this important aspect of Lagos history.

The senator also paid tribute to Olusi’s longstanding contributions to Lagos politics and governance, particularly as Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), where he continues to provide guidance, institutional memory and strategic counsel.

Describing Prince Olusi as a repository of wisdom and experience, Abiru said the contributions of respected elders remained invaluable to leadership and public service.

“Your life reminds us that leadership is not simply about occupying positions; it is about the influence we exert, the values we uphold and the positive legacies we leave behind,” he said.

Abiru further noted that Islamic values, including discipline, compassion, justice, charity, honesty and respect for human dignity, were essential to responsible citizenship, good governance and national development.

He called for greater engagement with Nigeria’s religious and cultural heritage as a means of promoting tolerance, peaceful coexistence and national unity.

Describing the publications as more than birthday commemorative initiatives, the senator noted that they are valuable assets in knowledge and the preservation of Lagos’ intellectual heritage. He urged educational institutions, libraries, researchers, religious organisations and members of the public to acquire and engage with the books.

Abiru formally launched the publications, expressing confidence that they would stimulate further scholarship and serve as lasting references on Lagos history and its Islamic heritage.

He congratulated Prince Olusi on attaining the milestone age of 90 and on the conferment of the prestigious title of Baba Adinni of Yorubaland, wishing him continued good health, wisdom and many more years of impactful service.

The Chief Imam of Lagos, His Eminence Sheikh Imam Engr. Sulaimon Oluwatoyin Abou-Nolla, who was represented by Imam Shakirudeen Mofesaye, applauded Prince Olusi for his love for Nigeria and Islam. He thanked Senator Abiru for his generous donation for the book launch.
