On 12th September 2023, the music industry suffered a devastating blow with the untimely passing of one of its own, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, professionally known as Mohbad.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain shrouded in mystery, as investigations have only recently commenced following the call for justice on his behalf.
It’s crucial to note that Mohbad had voiced concerns about his safety early last year, alleging assault and threats from his former record label boss, Azeez Fashola, widely known as Naira Marley. In a heartfelt video, Mohbad had even explicitly stated that Naira Marley should be held accountable if anything happened to him. However, Naira Marley countered these claims, attributing them to the artist’s drug use.
After parting ways with the label, Mohbad released a single titled “Tiff,” in which he disclosed how his family had been contacted and his mother threatened when he expressed his desire to leave. This shocking revelation shed light on the immense challenges Mohbad faced in his pursuit of success.
Mohbad’s tragic demise brought attention to the darker side of the music industry, exposing the harrowing experiences he endured. It galvanized Nigerians, both young and old, who joined protests held worldwide, demanding justice for the young artist. Heart-wrenching videos depicting Mohbad being physically assaulted and the scars he bore circulated on the internet, provoking anger and empathy among the masses.
It became apparent that Mohbad had attempted to convey a message through his songs, a message that often went unnoticed as listeners were captivated by the catchy beats and melodies. His struggles and pain were concealed behind the music.
At just 27 years old, Mohbad was reported to have battled severe depression and hypertension, living in constant fear and unable to lead a normal life. His tragic death is a sobering reminder of the toll fame and success can take on individuals.
In a bittersweet turn of events, Mohbad’s songs soared to the top of the charts, and he even gained recognition in The New York Times. Sadly, he did not live to witness this acknowledgment, but it underscored the profound love and admiration people had for him.
We must also acknowledge the anonymous blogger known as “Gistlover” who played a pivotal role in championing the movement for justice on behalf of Mohbad.
