If research is to be believed, people who smoke weed every day are having around 20% more sex than people who smoke occasionally or don’t smoke at all.
The study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine on Friday, was conducted by researchers at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, who analysed the data of 50 000 participants in the USA aged 25-45.
“We reported how often they smoke – monthly, weekly or daily – and how many times they’ve had sex in the last month,” Dr Michael Eisenberg, the study’s senior author was quoted saying in an NPR report.
“What we found was compared to never-users, those who reported daily use had about 20% more sex. So over the course of a year, they’re having sex maybe 20 more times.”
On average, women who smoked weed every day had sex 7,1 times in a month, compared to the six times enjoyed by women who eschewed weed. .
For men, the average drops to 6,9 times for those who regularly smoke and 5,6 times for non-smokers.
The researchers also considered confounding factors like whether the participants had children and whether they drink alcohol or take higher-grade drugs and it brought them back to the same departure point – the more weed a person smokes, the more sex they were likely to have.
“One question my patients always have is about whether smoking marijuana frequently would negatively impact their sexual function. We don’t want people to smoke to improve sexual function, but it probably doesn’t hurt things,” says Eisenberg.
He does, however, warn that the study shouldn’t be misinterpreted as having a causal link.
“It doesn’t say if you smoke more marijuana, you’ll have more sex.”
