The Importance of knowing our roots

by Jessica Ofuoma

In the ever-evolving world we live in today, the younger generation seems to be losing touch with their cultural roots, and this is a matter of concern. Traditionally, parents and grandparents used to sit their children down and share stories about their origins, their land, and the customs that defined their way of life. These stories were like windows into the past, connecting us to our heritage.

However, in recent times, it appears that many young people are becoming increasingly disconnected from their cultural roots. The pervasive influence of Westernization and the dominance of certain religious beliefs have led to the belief that anything traditional is somehow “fetish” or outdated.

Our roots, though, are the very essence of who we are. They shape our identity and provide a unique lens through which we view the world. Without a strong connection to our cultural heritage, we risk becoming mere clones of Western culture. This is not to say that embracing Western ideas or technologies is wrong, but it’s essential to strike a balance.

Parents have a crucial role to play in preserving and passing down their cultural traditions to the next generation. It is the duty of parents to instill in their children a deep understanding of the customs, values, and practices of their land. This knowledge should not be seen as a burden, but rather as a precious gift, a source of pride, and a bridge to our ancestors.

As the world continues to evolve, it’s important that we don’t blindly follow the tide of change. Our traditions and customs are an integral part of our heritage, and they deserve to be passed down from one generation to the next. Our roots are not something to be forgotten or discarded; they are a source of strength and a wellspring of wisdom.

In conclusion, the younger generation should not forget where they come from. Embracing our roots does not mean rejecting progress or change; it means cherishing the wisdom and traditions that have been passed down through the ages. Our cultural heritage is what makes us unique, and it’s a treasure that should not be lost in the sands of time. It’s time to reconnect with our roots, to learn from our past, and to ensure that the next generation knows and appreciates the rich tapestry of their heritage.
