Depression is one common illness affecting Nigerian celebrities right now. It affects the rich particularly because of what they pass through on a daily basis. Depression doesn’t have anything to do with your status in society. It has killed many, especially in recent years. But before we go deep into it, let us tell you more about depression.
Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home.
Are you feeling sad and down and just can’t shake off these emotions? Depending on the other signs, having a low mood could be an indicator of having a major depressive disorder. There are several different symptoms of depression that can make this common mental health issue so severe and potentially impairing. During the Covid-19 lock down a lot of Nigerian celebrities went through depression because of the lack of activities that they were used to. Some of them were financially down because Covid-19 affected their businesses. These and others are some of the reasons why depression is on the increase, especially among celebrities.
In this write-up, you will learn about many things; things Nigerian celebrities now do to avoid depression.
A few days ago, City People visited one of the popular churches in Lagos where the rich and celebrities worship. We were opportune to hear from a celebrity who openly revealed her secret of overcoming depression and what she often does to avoid depression before it consumes her..
The young lady revealed that she’s now fond of dancing either in church or at home. And that’s why she doesn’t miss church service. The young lady said that anytime you see my update on Instagram dancing, all I am trying to do is to pull myself away from negative thoughts and feelings. I do that often and it helps a great deal. During the church service, we noticed how celebrities danced to the choir ministration. Sometimes when they are not in the church, these are people you’ll find in front of standing mirrors dancing away their pains and they mostly upload the videos on Instagram for comments and grams.
Another way Nigerian celebrities avoid depression is by attending parties. Once they hear their favourite musicians like King Wasiu Ayinde (K1), Naira Marley, Davido, Wizkid or any other popular musician will grace the party, they spend their last kobo to make sure they attend the party. Such celebrities don’t hide away from this. They are compelled to buy aso ebi for the party.
Let’s also tell you that celebrities now derive a lot of joy from what they like as a way of fighting depression. Some celebrities who are rich go for the material things that can make them happy. The way celebrities are buying exotic cars especially in the last few years can also be linked to this argument. Many Nigerian celebrities love exotic cars and to make themselves happy, they go for the best available cars. That’s why you see many celebrities buying new cars. Exotic cars are many celebrities fantasies and they go all out to acquire them for their own satisfaction and happiness. While for others, it’s clothing. Some celebrities derive a lot of happiness by changing their wardrobe and that’s why you see them every day on Instagram and Facebook with a new dress. It’s not necessary to show off, it’s what makes them happy. There are celebrities during the Covid-19 lockdown that would dress to kill, tie gele and do makeup without any party. All they wanted to achieve was to look good in their favourite or a new dress to fight their depression.
Have you also noticed the craving for magnificent houses is another thing among Nigerian celebrities? Yes, apart from showing off, luxury houses or estates actually make some celebrities the happiest. They derive happiness from good homes, hence they spend a huge amount of money to be happy and this reduces the chances of being depressed.
A lot of Nigerian celebrities have gone through this and some of them have revealed what they went through. A typical example is Toyin Abraham.
Award-winning actress, Toyin Abraham revealed her struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts and was scared to talk about what she was going through at the time with close friends and family members. This cuts across but many of them have deployed a solution to deal with depression and some of these solutions as highlighted above have been known to work for them.
