Three Nigerian Sisters Created An African-Inspired Emoji Keyboard

Emojis are quickly becoming a universal language – they’re literally everywhere. But most emojis are frustratingly eurocentric and African emojis, while upcoming, are not even half as popular.

That’s why three Nigeria-born sisters, Mirian Chinyere Ugokwe, Lilian Chioma Ugokwe and MarySonia Chizoba Ugokwe created their own emoji keyboard, Afreekmoji  with emojis which are representative of Africa and its rich culture.

Afreekmoji features over 60 expressive, African-inspired emojis to brighten up conversations and share the beauty of African individuality. According to the sisters:

“AfreekMoji is all about positivity and sharing the African culture with pride, we want to help people identify with their heritage.”

The sisters are no strangers to being entrepreneurs – they previously cofounded an international African-inspired clothing business named Dashikipride, which has been worn by celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Remy Ma, Lil Kim and Monica.

The Afreekmoji app is now available on the App store for $0.99 (425).
