Uganda To Review Social Media Tax – Prime Minister

Uganda’s government has announced that the new social media and mobile money taxes will be reviewed. Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda told parliament that the review is being expedited to ensure that government presents an Amendment of the Excise Duty (Amendment) Act 2018 to the House for debate on July 19.

 

“Honourable members will therefore have the opportunity to debate and consult widely to guide Parliament during the consideration and debate of the Amendment Bill,” reads part of Rugunda’s statement.

 

The Ush200($0.05) tax on the daily use of apps like Twitter and Facebook has led to protests in the country.

 

The taxes took effect at the beginning of July.
