The University of Ibadan (UI) has been ranked among the top 1000 universities in the world by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

Nigeria’s premier university, which was established in 1948, was ranked 991.

The ranking by CWUR is judged by seven different factors with research accounting for 70 percent of the total score this year.

“CWUR’s rankings grade universities on seven factors without relying on surveys and university data submissions: quality of teaching, alumni employment, quality of faculty, research output, quality publications, influence, and citations,” CWUR said in a statement.

“The methodology has been enhanced this year, with research now accounting for 70 percent of the total score.”

While Nigeria had only one university on the list, South Africa had seven. Four Egyptian universities are ranked among the top 1000.

For the seventh year in a row, Harvard University ranked the best university in the world.

The US had the highest universities on the list at 213 followed closely by China with 108.

In 2016, CWUR did not consider any Nigerian university for lack of quality research.

“The main reason for the absence of Nigerian universities from the top 1000 is that the research output of high-quality scientific publications in Nigeria is small compared to other countries,” the university told journalists.
