Legendary American entrepreneur, producer, and author Russell Simmons had hundreds of people spellbound at the Liberty Vuka Knowledge Summit, with a detailed blueprint of his personal search for happiness
Simmons took his Adidas sneakers off and crossed his legs on the white leather couch. Instead of proselytising about religion or branding, he shared his personal journey from being a hard-partying music industry celebrity to becoming a deeply conscious spiritual warrior.
He laughed deprecatingly at himself for supporting a sneaker brand that “breeds special cows for shoes” – whose meat nobody eats. But his warmth and honesty bowled the silent audience over nonetheless.
Here follows a few nuggets from one of the most unlikely business conference speeches this year.
- All the Scriptures say the same sh*t. But basically, there is one God that exists inside you and your relationship with that God inside is the bliss that will attract everything you can imagine. The Scriptures remind us of that same truth. It’s just that they’ve been misread and misinterpreted.
- You need to put circulation in your body through exercise and meditate. There are so many things in the world that we want nothing of. You need meditation to decide for yourself what’s important to you.
- You must stop eating animals. Why do n*ggers got to eat so many animals! The world has 200 million animals made to be born into the worst stuff imaginable. Just so you can get cancer and cholesterol and destroy the planet. It’s the worst comic disaster in the history of the world acting over, again and again, every day. And we’re doing it because the collective is doing it. Stop it.
- We should always put happiness above success, money doesn’t make you happy, but happiness makes you money.
- Attachment to the present moment should be your guide and your goal. Happiness is a choice.
- No matter how rich you are, you can only sit your ass in one seat at a time. Needing nothing attracts everything. That’s super-rich.
- All of us have some faith and our job is to espouse on that faith. When we do it as a habit, it becomes true.
- I took a lot of drugs to get to a space of clarity. We do all these short-term things to be present. Just to get a second of presence in that orgasm, toy or drug. We need to go to the source for a constant state of presence. There’s always a hole inside you until you fill it with God or love.
- The highest calling is to give happiness to others. Your happiness is intertwined in the happiness of those around you. There’s no way out.
- Morning meditation beats the sh*t out of late night drinking or cocaine and heroine and fairy dust. You must do it with consistency – the scripture says without interruption – for 30 or 40 days. Wake up every day sober and you start liking mornings and eventually, you’ll let go of all that sh*t. Clarity is so much better than all of that.
