1910s

From the high maintenance glamour looks of the early 1900s to the more casual styles of the 2010s, beauty trends have changed drastically over time. Cut has compiled a time-lapse of a model sporting the most prominent looks from each decade over the past century to show how beauty has evolved.

In the first episode of their “100 Years of Beauty in 1 Minute” series, Cut has taken on the trends that swept America throughout the decades. Starting with a popular look from the 1910s, the video shows the same model undergoing a transformation to meet the beauty standards of each following decade.

It’s clear to see how trends were driven by celebrity taste-makers who were prominent in each time period. After having her hair and makeup done to create each look, the model strikes popular poses that women of the era would be most likely be seen or photographed doing.

Watching the evolution in sequence is almost like a history lesson in American beauty trends, giving insight on how each look transitioned or even rebelled from the previous decade. The montage ends with the 2010s as the model takes a selfie, which is fitting considering that nowadays most women believe social media drives trends.

Not only do these changing looks represent what people of each decade found aesthetically pleasing, but they also reflect the societal attitudes of each time period.

One interesting observation of watching this beauty evolution is how hairstyles went from wildly intricate updos in the early 1900s and then slowly transitioned to more natural looks by the 2010s. Only time will tell if this will continue to be the case with beauty trends over the next 100 years.Cut’s “100 Years of Beauty in 1 Minute” compilation has received over 30 million views and counting on YouTube. The video channel’s series highlights the beauty evolution of different countries and different genders with each installment.
