Whenever his name is mentioned, people usually associate it with Abeokuta, so much that his name, Sefiu Alao can be used interchangeably with Abeokuta. Both are synonymous. It is because Abeokuta is where Sefiu Alao was born, in the ’60s, and he has lived in that ancient city all his life. He is now in his 50s. He was born, bred and buttered in Abeokuta and all his playing life has been in the city. Why is this so? Why can’t Alhaji Sefiu Alao leave Abeokuta? What has he seen in Abeokuta that has made him stay there? Is it a deliberate decision? If you leave here now, you will see houses from here in Abeokuta to Lagos. There are houses along the way. The whole route is lined with houses. Lagos is now close to Abeokuta. There is nothing I am looking for in Lagos that I can’t get in Abeokuta. If I had wanted to relocate, I would have done that years ago when I was very, very small. Then look at it, if I relocate to Lagos, I would have to go and queue. Number what will I call myself? I will go and queue.
Abeokuta is my land of birth. I was born here. I went to school here. I grew up here. I am an Abeokuta Boy. This week alone, I have been to Lagos 3 times. Next week, we would be in Lagos for about 2 times on Friday, and Sunday. So, I am not looking for anything in Lagos. I am not missing anything in Lagos. There is nothing in Lagos that you can’t find here. No 2, Abeokuta is very peaceful. It is safe. Less hustle. There is so much wahala in Lagos. Whenever you have been living is the best. You will have become used to it. If you ask someone who lives in Lagos to relocate, he or she won’t. They will say it is hard. It is tough to relocate to Abeokuta. They will say it is tough. We would say it is rough. The wahala of Lagos is too much we are just always stuck in traffic. The truth is that where you are used to is always better. Whenever God has put you, stay there.
There are some people who should be living in villages to do farming, they would say they are coming to Abeokuta to drive TAXI cabs, whereas if he had stayed back in his village he would have become rich and ok. It is somebody who does not know the right way that will be going after what is not lost. Abeokuta is ok for me. God has blessed me here. And that is where I will continue to stay and there is no town I don’t go to. What else do they want me to do that they are wondering why I have stayed in Abeokuta? Where do they want me to go? I am going nowhere. Leave me here. I am ok here. Leave me here in Abeokuta. I will continue to stay in Egba and be chopping life.
