  • Star Actress, CAROLYNA HUTCHINGS

Everybody knows Carolyna Hutchings. She is regarded as one of the prettiest actresses to come from this side of the planet. And she’s very accomplished too. Caroline has been around for as long as many can remember. She first hit our consciousness when she stormed the movie industry in the early 2000s and she has remained a permanent feature in the entertainment sector ever since. Then, she was known as Caroline Ekanem. Then, on account of her first marriage, she became more popularly known as Caroline Danjuma. Presently, she is addressed as Carolyna Hutchings.

This gorgeous looking Scottish-Nigerian actress has evolved over the years from being a popular actress to becoming a film producer, interior designer, a business woman and a consummate philanthropist. Her very significant contributions to the upliftment of under privileged women and children, young but mentally unstable mothers, and interventions she made in the cases of the Ayeni conjoined twins have been well documented. Caroline has also offered fibroid surgeries to women and provided free Mammogram to about 200 women who badly needed it. These and many more are some of the reasons why the Rotary Club of Ikoyi recently appointed Caroline Hutchings as its Ambassador for Polio, a position she would use to help the Rotary fight Polio and enhance its eradication from the society.

In 2022, this stunning beauty shocked everyone when the news broke that the African Action Congress (AAC), Akwa Ibom State had nominated her as the running mate to its governorship candidate, Mr. Iboro Otu, for the 2023 election. The party said that the extremely smart and intelligent Caroline was chosen because of her love for humanity, leadership ability and commitment towards the betterment of Akwa Ibom communities.

The statement had read, “On behalf of our great party, the African Action Congress and the Iboro Otu Governorship Campaign Organisation, we write to inform members of our great party, Akwa Ibom State citizens and fellow Nigerians of our party’s deputy governorship candidate for the 2023 elections in Akwa Ibom State, in the person of Chief Mrs. Caroline Uduak Danjuma.

“Chief Mrs. Caroline, the Obong Uwana of Eket, is an international businesswoman, award-winning actress and philanthropist.

“She is from the family of the former paramount ruler of Eket, His Royal Majesty, Edidem William Esiet Ekwere.”

The party highlighted Danjuma’s support in separating the conjoined Ayeni Twins, feeding over 3,000 people and advocating for the rights and freedom of Lybian slaves.

“Chief Mrs Caroline is a hardworking mother of 3 who is passionate about education for all children and youths especially women, she’s a supporter and campaigner for women equality, and an advocate for community development through youth and women enterprise,” the statement read.

Not many saw this coming. Caroline had indeed proven that she’s a woman of many parts. She’s made a success of her career as an actress, she’s done well as a business woman, making successful forays into construction and Oil &Gas and made a name for herself as a consummate philanthropist. But no one saw her emerging as a possible deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State. She just didn’t seem cut out for politics. But here she was, highly motivated and firing on all cylinders, ready and prepared to take on the pressures that came with the rigours of politics and the responsibilities that come with the office of the First Lady.

In the end, her party didn’t win the governorship election, but the very mentally strong Caroline Hutchings is immensely proud of the effort she put into it and would clearly seize the opportunity again if it presented itself one more time.

But what was the motivation? Why did she take the big plunge into politics? On the 21st of July 2022, the actress took to her Instagram page to throw more light about her aspirations, where she revealed her educational background and qualifications. She also talked about her businesses, which range from construction, real estate, agriculture and finally Oil & Gas.

”I believe I’m quite intelligent looking at how much I have achieved in my life with regards to business and education, and when you compare me to the caliber of most leaders in Nigeria today, I think a lot of people would prefer to have someone like myself in a position of power than otherwise. I clearly don’t intend to ruffle anyone’s shoulders.”

“I’m an actress and I’ve been quite successful at it without having to state much details. I believe my ability to be successful in my line of business and other businesses I operate including oil and gas, real estate and my philanthropic works with my foundation Hopeville Foundation, all would add a lot to our campaign positively. If it were otherwise, I’m sure Mr. Iboro Otu wouldn’t have picked me.”

The brilliant actress added: “I was introduced to the idea by the governorship candidate who found me best as a partner in the race in terms of my ability to deliver and commitment to serve. I took time to consider the risks of playing politics in Nigeria and after consultation with close friends and family, I decided to join in the race and lead the charge in the transformation of Akwa Ibom state.”

Caroline also recently revealed to City People one of the major reasons she grabbed the opportunity to go into politics. “When I ran for deputy governorship, the whole idea was to use that position to add value to the lives of women and children in Akwa Ibom. I wanted to use the position to uplift and transform the less privileged women of Akwa Ibom. You know, that was my first time of contesting and I knew for a fact that this is politics and it was going to be a learning curve for me. God knew my heart, He knew what I wanted to do.”
