Why Rich Muslims Travel To Mecca For UMRAH

by Jamiu Abubakar

In Islam, there are two major forms of pilgrimage: Hajj and Umrah. Both involve traveling to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for religious and worship purposes.

Hajj, the more well-known pilgrimage, is one of the five pillars of Islam and is obligatory once in a lifetime for Muslims who are physically and financially able. It takes place during a specific period; the first 13 days of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and last month of the Islamic calendar. However, those who can afford to perform Hajj multiple times are encouraged to do so, as the rewards are immense.

On the other hand, Umrah, often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage,” can be performed at any time of the year. While not compulsory, Umrah is a deeply rewarding act of worship that brings spiritual purification and countless blessings.

Rich and Wealthy Muslims, in particular, frequently embark on Umrah for various reasons. Below are some of the key motivations behind their devotion to these sacred journeys.

(1) SPIRITUAL FULFILLMENT & SEEKING FORGIVENESS

Umrah is a powerful opportunity for Muslims to cleanse their hearts, seek closeness to Allah, and atone for past sins. Many wealthy individuals, despite their success, may feel spiritually disconnected due to their busy lifestyles. Umrah offers them a chance to renew their faith. According to Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessing be Upon Him) “One Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the next one.”

— [Sahih al-Bukhari 1773]. A high-profile businessman burdened by the stress of his career may travel for Umrah to refresh his soul, find inner peace, and seek divine mercy.

(2) FOLLOWING THE SUNNAH OF THE PROPHET (SAW)

Islam encourages Muslims to follow the teachings and practices (Sunnah) of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Since the Prophet and his companions performed Umrah regularly, those with financial means see it as a noble and praiseworthy act. According to Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessing be Upon Him)

“Perform Umrah in Ramadan, for it is equivalent to Hajj with me.”

— [Sahih al-Bukhari 1863]. No wonder, many wealthy Muslims seek the opportunity of the blessed month of Ramadan to embark on Umurah pilgrimage. Some of them are already preparing to spend this year’s month of Ramadan or its last 10 days in Mecca for Umurah purpose.

(3) SEEKING ALLAH’S BLESSINGS AND INCREASED WEALTH

Many Muslims believe that frequent visits to the holy land attract divine blessings, financial growth, and protection from hardships. This belief motivates wealthy individuals to perform Umrah repeatedly, hoping for continued prosperity and success. The prophet said: “Keep on performing Hajj and Umrah, because they eliminate poverty and sin just as the bellows remove impurity from iron, gold, and silver.”

— [Sunan al-Tirmidhi 810]. A successful entrepreneur who witnessed financial breakthroughs after his first Umrah may continue performing it as a means of gratitude and seeking further blessings.

(4) ACTS OF CHARITY AND PHILANTHROPY

For the rich, Umrah is also an opportunity to give back to the less fortunate. Many wealthy Muslims donate generously during their pilgrimage—sponsoring Umrah trips for the needy, feeding the poor in Mecca, or funding charitable projects like building wells and mosques. “And establish of prayers where Zakah is given.

It is the believe of Muslims that when you give to the needy or support Allah’s work, you are by extension helping yourself because you will get the reward back in manifold from Allah.

— [Qur’an 2:110]. Some business tycoons and politicians use their Umrah visits to fundraise for orphanages or build schools in underserved Muslim communities.

(5) NETWORKING AND BUSINESS EXPANSION

Mecca attracts Muslims from all corners of the world, including influential entrepreneurs, investors, and leaders. Many wealthy individuals seize this opportunity to connect with like-minded business people while fulfilling their religious obligations.

“There is no blame upon you for seeking the bounty of your Lord (by trading) during pilgrimage.”

— [Qur’an 2:198]. A CEO may meet potential investors from different countries during Umrah, leading to business collaborations that benefit the Muslim community.

(6) GRATITUDE AND THANKSGIVING

Those who have been blessed with wealth see Umrah as a way to thank Allah for their success and well-being. Many embark on this journey after overcoming major life challenges, such as recovering from an illness, securing a major deal, or surviving a crisis. According to Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessing be Upon Him):

“The best of gratitude is performing acts of worship with sincerity.”

— [Sunan Ibn Majah 3803]. A billionaire who survived a life-threatening illness may perform Umrah to express gratitude for his healing and seek continued protection.

(7) LUXURY PILGRIMAGE & COMFORTABLE TRAVEL

Unlike regular pilgrims, wealthy Muslims can afford VIP accommodations, first-class flights, private tour guides, and exclusive access to the holy sites. This makes their journey stress-free and more enjoyable, allowing them to focus on worship. “And spend in the way of Allah, and do not throw yourselves into destruction.”

— [Qur’an 2:195]. A high-ranking government official may fly in a private jet, stay in a five-star hotel overlooking the Kaaba, and hire a private Islamic scholar for guidance during Umrah.

(8) STRENGTHENING FAMILY BONDS & LEAVING A LEGACY

Many wealthy Muslims take their spouses, children, and extended family members on Umrah, ensuring they grow up in a spiritually rich environment. By doing so, they instill Islamic values and the importance of faith in future generations. The Prophet said:

“The best gift a father can give his child is good manners and education.”

— [Sunan al-Tirmidhi 4977]. A well-established business mogul may travel for Umrah every year with his family, teaching his children the significance of Islamic rituals.

(9) ESCAPE FROM STRESS AND DISTRACTIONS

Many wealthy individuals live under-pressure, filled with responsibilities and stress. Umrah serves as a spiritual retreat, helping them to to disconnect from worldly affairs, reflect on life, and seek divine guidance. The Prophet admonished that: “There is a time for worship, and there is a time for rest. Give each its due time time.”

— [Sunan Abu Dawood 2858]. A politician burdened by governance may take a break to reconnect with his faith and seek wisdom before making major decisions.

(10) PRAYING FOR A GOOD DEATH AND THE HEREAFTER

Many Muslims dream of dying in Mecca or Medina, as it is believed to bring great spiritual rewards. Some elderly wealthy Muslims perform Umrah frequently, hoping to be called to Allah while in worship. According to Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessing be Upon Him): “Whoever dies in one of the two sacred places (Mecca or Medina) will be raised among the righteous on the Day of Judgment.”

— [Sunan Ibn Majah 3112]. A retired millionaire may spend his final years making frequent Umrah trips, praying for a peaceful death in the holy land.

For wealthy Muslims, Umrah is more than just a religious trip—it is a way to deepen faith, seek blessings, give back to the community, and experience spiritual renewal. Their financial ability allows them to perform Umrah multiple times, benefiting not just themselves but also others through charity and networking.

May Allah accept the efforts of all pilgrims and grant them peace, prosperity, and forgiveness. Ameen.
