World Water Day: Rotary Clubs in District 9111 organize groundbreaking of mega water project in Obafemi-Owode

Rotary Clubs in District 9111 are hosting the Groundbreaking of a Mega Water Project in Obafemi- Owode, Ogun State on Monday, March 24, 2025, at 11 am.

 

Rotary Club of Ewutuntun, Rotary Club of Akowonjo, Rotary Club of Gowon Estate, Rotary Club of Ikeja South, Rotary Club of Oregun, Rotary Club of Opebi, Rotary Club of Abule Egba Metro, Rotary Club of Ipaja New Dawn, Rotary Club of Abeokuta Metro, Rotary Club of Adeniyi Jones, and Rotary Club of Isheri Golden are set to organize a groundbreaking ceremony of over 25 million Naira Mega Water project at Araromi village, Lagos – Abeokuta Expressway, Obafemi Owode Local Government, Ogun State.

 

The District Governor Rotary District 9111, Rtn Dr Wole Kukoyi disclosed that the World Water Day is on Saturday, March 22, 2025, and the mega water project is apt and timely.

Dr Kukoyi revealed that, “findings from the 2024 Water and Sanitation Sector Monitoring and Reporting ( WASSMO) indicated insufficient sector delivery, heavy reliance on Official Development Assistance (ODA), with 800 million people across Africa lacking access to safely managed sanitation and 400 million without safe drinking water. The multi-clubs mega water borehole project is highly commendable,” he noted.

 

It President Rotary Club of Ewutuntun, Rtn Bukonla Alamu stated that “the mega water project will serve six communities and reticulation to two nearby villages: Odofi- Odo, Ooba, Ajetutu, Araromi, Odofi- Oke, and Ajetutu, all in Obafemi -Owode Local Government, Ogun State.

 

President Rotary Club of Ikeja South, Rtn Bolatito Olaboye noted that “ the month of March is equally earmarked for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) by Rotary International and this will definitely make a huge impact in affected beneficiary communities,”She said.

 

President Rotary Club of Gowon Estate, Rotarian Olayiwola Ajayi in his remarks quoted the United Nations and WHO that “Safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene are crucial to human health and well-being. Safe WASH is not only a prerequisite to health but contributes to livelihoods, school attendance, and dignity and helps to create resilient communities living in healthy environments,” he said.

 

President Rotary Club of Akowonjo, Rtn Ben Dare added that “Drinking unsafe water impairs health through illnesses such as diarrhea, and untreated excreta contaminates groundwaters and surface waters used for drinking water, irrigation, bathing, and household purposes.

 

President Dare observed that “Chemical contamination of water continues to pose a health burden, whether natural in origin such as arsenic and fluoride, or anthropogenic such as nitrate. Safe and sufficient WASH plays a key role in preventing numerous NTDs such as trachoma, soil-transmitted helminths, and schistosomiasis.”

 

In his contribution, President Rotary Club of Adeniyi Jones, Rtn Emeka Wlison Metus and a health expert disclosed that “Diarrhoea deaths as a result of inadequate WASH were reduced by half during the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) period (1990–2015), with significant progress on water and sanitation provision playing a key role.”

 

Dignitaries expected to grace the Mega Water Project groundbreaking ceremony include: District 9111 Governor-elect, Rtn Henry Akinyele; the District Governor-nominee, Rtn Bukola Bakare; District Governor nominee-designate, Rtn Samuel Ayetutu; Personal Assistant to the District Governor, PAG Adeshina Abiola; Sponsor Clubs President and their WASH Committee Chairmen.
