How I Started Singing At Age 8 – Gospel Singer, Mary Bjohns Reveals

by Titilope Oshunlalu

In an interview with City People’s Titilope Oshunlalu, Mary Bjohns revealed some things about herself and her music. Below are the excerpts of the interview:

Can we get to know you?

I’m Mary Bjohns, I’m from Ondo state, in Owo local government, Nigeria. I’m married with children, I’m a pastor, a conference speaker, a gospel songwriter, a recording artist and an entrepreneur.

I was born and brought up in Lagos, State, Nigeria.

How long have you been into music?

I started singing as early as age 8 in the choir at Assemblies Of God Church. But released my debut track recently.

Can you tell us about your track/tracks?

I have released several tracks already, MY Worship Belongs to You, You Reign Forever, Am Amazed, and a few others.

My Worship Belongs to you. The track is an expression of How Awesome God really is, I call him God of Awesome Wonders….. And I also gave my commitment to giving Him my Worship forever.

And the other track, You Reign Forever is one of the Worship songs that inspires me the most, because of the way I was inspired to write it, telling God He reigns forever and His Kingdom has no end.

There was a day I kept pondering about how good God has been to me and how much He has helped me, that inspired me to write the song coming from my heart because I really can’t pay Him for all the things He keeps doing for me.

What inspired you into music?

My Love for God and my desire to have more fellowship with God. Growing as a young teenage girl then, I realized I had this passion for music, I love listening to good songs, and

I love Worshiping God in songs and this led to a strong desire in me to inspire others into rendering Heartfelt worship to  God through music

How did you feel going into music?

I feel great, happy and fulfilled.

Have you at any point in your career tried to embrace secular music?

No, not at all.

Why?

It’s a privilege to be used by God to minister in songs and even in words to His people, and I believe God has billions of replacements for anyone that will not do what He has called such a person to do.  I know what He has called me to do, it’s best for me to stick to it. And nothing ever will make me compromise my stand, as He gives me the grace and ability.

Do you believe that gospel artists must be paid when they minister?

Well, I feel that has a lot to do with an individual’s level of relationship with God and their personal conviction. Everyone has their own belief system and what works for them.  God relates with us as individuals. For me, I sing without expecting any payment because I don’t see my music ministry as a form of career, that I needed to get rich. Winning souls for God’s kingdom to me is a command, whichever method I decide to use as a medium for soul-winning be it through music/one-to-one evangelism, preaching, the printing of tracts and so on… I am not doing it so that anyone should pay me, I’m only doing what I have been commanded to do by God in His word. I see it as working for my father’s kingdom, I allow God to pay me because He pays better. So it depends on an individual’s conviction, everyone has a reason for doing what they do.

As a pastor Mrs and pastor’s wife, what is the feedback from your members about your music?

My church family are wonderful people of God, their feedback has been a positive one and they have also been of great support and encouragement.

Do you sing in Church?

Yes, I sing in church.

Which top gospel artist do you look up to….?

The top gospel artist I look up to is this blessed woman of God Sinach, although there are a few others, she is my number one model.

I love her person, her passion and her love for God.

Can you tell us about your husband?

I thank God for the gift of my husband, He is very supportive, He believes in my vision, and he motivates and inspires me a lot. He is a great encouragement.
